Starting your own brokerage

Leaving a bank, leaving a brokerage, or writing loans under someone else's arrangement and wondering what it would take to run your own. It is a real question and it is not one this firm answers.

What people are actually asking

  • You are a banker who can see the other side of the desk, and nobody will tell you what the first two years actually look like.
  • You are newly accredited and need a mentor, because both the MFAA and the FBAA require one before you write loans on your own.
  • You are under an arrangement you signed years ago and have never read closely since.
  • You want your own business without building a back office from scratch to get one.

What is on the other end

Their offering, in their terms.

Mentoring, which is not optional

Both industry associations require a new broker to be mentored by an accredited mentor. Broker Sidekick's is Fabien Tribe, accredited by the MFAA and the FBAA, working weekly one to one and through individual applications rather than at arm's length.

An aggregation and licensing arrangement

Credit representative support under an established Australian Credit Licence, with compliance templates and guidance on responsible lending obligations, so the structure exists on day one rather than being assembled after the first deal.

A tech stack without lock-ins

MyCRM, Quickli, Slack and the integrations around them, chosen rather than mandated. Nick provides the technology support on that side, which is the clearest reason to read the interest disclosure below before taking our recommendation at face value.

Other brokers to ask

A community of brokers at different stages, which matters more in year one than most people expect. The questions that stall a new broker are rarely the hard ones. They are the ordinary ones nobody has written down.

Before you take our word for it

We are not neutral about where this goes.

Broker Sidekick is a separate business in which Nicholas Clunes holds an interest, and he is named on their own site as the technology support on the Start pathway. We are telling you that here rather than leaving you to find it. This site is paid nothing for sending you there, and there are other people who do this work.

Broker Sidekick works with mortgage brokers building their own business. This firm arranges commercial finance only and offers no consumer credit at all. If you write residential loans and a client turns up wanting to buy a business or a warehouse, those are two different doors and neither of us is standing in the other one.
